In 2006, Simon Takashina set out to develop a new brand that focused on high-end personal protective marine safety equipment. He was inspired to name it BLUESTORM to express the emotion and experience of the mariner. But Simon was not a newcomer to the world of building outstanding safety equipment. It is in his blood. The Takashina family first started making life jackets in Osaka, Japan in 1935. The company that Simon’s Grandfather founded over 70 years ago, the Takashina Life Preservers Company, is today one of the oldest continuously family owned and operated life jacket manufacturing companies in the world, with operations in Japan, the US, and their own USCG approved ISO9000 certified manufacturing facility in China. And as if this were not enough, Bluestorm is the second watersport brand established in the US by the Takashina family. In 1991 Simon’s brother, Yoshi (now the President of TLPC) and his mother Dorothy (an authority on US Coast Guard approvals and a board member of PFDMA) founded MTI Adventurewear in Watertown, Massachusetts. Now headquartered with BLUESTORM in Plympton, Massachusetts, MTI specializes in PFDs for paddlesports: canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. It is a leading paddlesport brand in the United States, sold by hundreds of specialty store dealers and high end retailers across the nation. MTI stands for Marine Technologies International; MTI and BLUESTORM are two of the three brands under the Marine Technologies International umbrella.
So BLUESTORM is rather unique in that it is a new brand but it’s not a newcomer. There is experience at every level, from design to manufacturing, from sales to customer service support, from the headquarters in Plympton, Massachusetts to a growing network of some of the most respected dealers, marine distributors, and marine professionals in the nation.
